Auckland has two Chinese-speaking worlds that don't always overlap. There's the older Cantonese community, rooted around Dominion Road and Balmoral for decades, with yum cha places that have been open since before most of us were born. Then there's the newer Mandarin-speaking population, tied to the University of Auckland, AUT and Massey's Albany campus, plus the steady flow of arrivals settling in Northcote, Albany and East Auckland around Howick and Botany.
Finding someone to practice with in person usually falls apart on logistics. You agree to meet after work near the CBD, and one person is stuck on the harbour bridge coming from the Shore, the other is crawling up the Northwestern from Henderson, and by the time anyone gets there it's dark and everyone's tired. Add Auckland's rain, which cancels more outdoor coffee meetups than people admit, and a study group that seemed like a great idea on a Tuesday quietly dies by the following week.

What time is there actually someone online to practice with?
Most activity is evenings after work, roughly 6 to 9pm, and weekend mornings, since a good chunk of the Mandarin-speaking side is on student schedules and the Cantonese side tends to be working during the day. Weekends are usually the easiest time to find a match without waiting around.
Do I need to meet the other person in person first?
No. Everything runs over video, which is exactly the point when one of you is on the Shore and the other's in Mount Roskill. You just log in at the time you've arranged and get started.
What level of Chinese do I need to join?
There's no minimum. Group classes are split by level with a native teacher guiding things, so beginners aren't thrown in with fluent speakers. For the 1-to-1 exchanges, you're matched with someone whose English level roughly mirrors your Chinese level, so both halves of the swap feel fair.
How much does it cost?
