If you speak German, Swedish gives you a head start that most learners don't get. Both languages compound nouns the same way, word order is close enough that you can often think in German and speak Swedish without disaster, and centuries of Low German trade through the Hanseatic League left Swedish full of near-identical vocabulary: fönster/Fenster, betala/bezahlen, möbel/Möbel, resa/Reise. Reading a Swedish newspaper after a few weeks of study feels much less foreign than it should.
What trips up German speakers is the music of the language. Swedish has pitch accent: the same word said with a different tone means something else, like anden (the duck) versus anden (the spirit) — a distinction German simply doesn't have, so your ear has to learn to hear it before your mouth can produce it. The sj-sound in words like sjuk or stjärna and the tj-sound in tjej don't exist in German either, and no amount of reading fixes that. Gender is another trap: Swedish only has common and neuter, not the three of German, so en bil (common) doesn't map onto das Auto, and you end up guessing wrong on words that felt safe.
False friends do real damage here because they look too honest to question: rolig looks like ruhig but means fun, not calm; gift looks like the German Gift but also means married; öl sounds like Öl but means beer, not oil. None of that shows up until a native corrects you mid-sentence, which is exactly what the one-to-one exchanges are for — you get called out on the tone and the fake cognates in real time, not three months later when the habit is set.

How long does it take a German speaker to learn Swedish?
Faster than average for basic conversation, because the vocabulary and word order overlap so much. What takes longer is the pitch accent and natural rhythm, which reading alone won't fix — that part needs regular time talking with native speakers, not a fixed number of weeks.
Is the one-to-one exchange actually free?
Yes. It's member to member: you give someone thirty minutes of German, they give you thirty minutes of Swedish, and nobody pays anybody. The small-group classes with native teachers are a separate, paid part of PBC — the exchange itself has no cost.
What level of Swedish do I need before joining an exchange?
Enough to hold a slow, basic conversation — simple sentences, present tense, everyday topics. The exchange is conversation practice with a native, not a lesson from zero, so arriving with some vocabulary from classes or self-study makes it far more useful.
How exactly is the half hour split?
Thirty minutes in Swedish, thirty minutes in German, agreed with your partner beforehand so nobody spends the whole session struggling in one direction. Most pairs switch languages halfway through rather than doing two separate calls.
