Learn Hungarian from Spanish (Spain) at PBC Languages

Hungarian isn't Indo-European, so the grammar reflexes that work for French or Italian won't save you here. The two things that trip up Spanish (Spain) speakers most: vowel length and the s/sz reversal. Spanish doesn't distinguish short and long vowels, so 'hat' (six) and 'hát' (back) sound identical to your ear at first, even though they're different words. And Hungarian 'sz' is pronounced like the Spanish 's', while plain 's' is pronounced 'sh' — exactly backwards from what your instinct expects, so you'll say 'six' and it comes out wrong for months if nobody corrects you live. The palatalized 'gy', 'ty' and 'ny' (as in 'magyar', 'kutya') also need a native ear checking you, because they don't exist in Spanish at all.

What calques badly: trying to translate prepositions. Hungarian doesn't have them — it uses suffixes stuck onto the noun ('a házban' = 'in the house', literally 'the house-in'), and there's no verb for 'tener'. You say 'nekem van egy könyvem', literally 'to-me is a book-mine', for 'tengo un libro'. If you keep hunting for a Spanish preposition to translate, you'll freeze; if you just absorb the suffix pattern from hearing it in conversation, it clicks faster than the grammar tables suggest.

Where you move fast: rolled 'r' is the same sound as in Spanish, so that's one less thing to fix. Hungarian also has zero grammatical gender, which is one less category to track than in French or German. And a good chunk of academic and technical vocabulary (info, matematika, probléma) came into Hungarian from the same Latin/Greek stock as Spanish, so once you know to listen for the Hungarian spelling shift, entire fields of vocabulary come almost for free.
