French speakers get a real break with Indonesian grammar. No conjugation tables: 'saya makan', 'dia makan', 'kami makan' all use the same verb 'makan' whether it's I, she, or we eating. No gender either, so you drop 'le/la' agreement completely. Adjectives even land in the same spot as French: 'rumah besar' (big house) follows the same noun-then-adjective order as 'maison grande'. That similarity alone lets French speakers build correct sentences faster than most other learners.
Where it gets tricky is pronunciation and spelling. The letter 'c' is always pronounced like the French 'tch', so 'cinta' (love) sounds like 'tchinta', not 'sinta' as a French eye would guess. The vowel 'e' hides two different sounds with no written accent to warn you: 'meja' (table) has a clear 'é' sound, while 'empat' (four) starts with a flat schwa. French readers are used to accents doing that job for them, so this ambiguity has to be memorized word by word.
The real wall is the prefix and suffix system. 'Makan' (eat) becomes 'makanan' (food), 'dimakan' (eaten, passive), and 'pemakan' (eater) - four words that look unrelated to a French speaker but share one root. Add classifiers like 'dua orang' (two people) or 'tiga ekor kucing' (three cats), where French has nothing similar, and you get the one part of Indonesian that genuinely takes repetition with a native to absorb.

How long does it take a French speaker to hold a basic conversation in Indonesian?
There's no fixed number, but the grammar itself won't be what slows you down since there's no conjugation and no gender to learn. The real time goes into vocabulary and getting comfortable with prefixes like me- and di-, which is exactly what regular conversation with a native speeds up.
Is the 1:1 exchange actually free?
Yes. You're trading time, not money: half an hour in Indonesian, half an hour in French, with a member who wants to learn what you already speak. Nobody pays for the exchange itself.
What level do I need before joining an exchange?
Enough to introduce yourself and ask a few basic questions. You don't need fluency, and PBC pairs you with someone at a compatible level so the exchange stays useful for both sides.
How exactly is the time split during a session?
Thirty minutes in Indonesian, thirty minutes in French, back to back in the same call. You switch roles halfway through, so both people get equal teaching and learning time.
