If you speak English, Italian pronunciation feels friendly fast: five clean vowels, no silent letters, and words that sound the way they're spelled. The rolled R and double consonants (penna vs pena, sonno vs sono) take some ear training, but you'll hear the difference within a few weeks of listening to a native teacher instead of an app voice.
Where people trip up: false friends. 'Camera' means room, not photo camera. 'Libreria' is a bookshop, not a library (that's 'biblioteca'). 'Parenti' means relatives, not parents ('genitori'). 'Fabbrica' is a factory, not fabric. These aren't rare words either, they show up in the first month of any real conversation, which is exactly why doing 1:1 exchanges early catches them before they become habits.
The structure that gets calqued badly is word order with adjectives and prepositions tied to specific verbs: 'pensare a', 'sognare di', 'innamorarsi di' don't map onto English patterns, and there's no shortcut, you just have to hear them enough times in context. On the other hand, verb conjugation for regular -are verbs (parlare, lavorare, studiare) follows a pattern you'll internalize in a few sessions, and Latin-root vocabulary means you already recognize far more words than you think.

How long does it take for an English speaker to get conversational in Italian?
It depends entirely on how often you practice speaking, not just studying. People who do regular 1:1 exchanges alongside small group classes tend to build confidence faster than those relying on apps alone, because they're forced to react in real time. We don't put a number on it since everyone's starting point and effort differ too much.
Is the exchange really free?
Yes. You give half an hour in English and get half an hour in Italian from a native speaker who's doing the same thing in reverse. No one pays, because both sides are teaching and learning at the same time.
What level do I need to join a class or exchange?
For group classes with a native teacher, we place you by level so you're not lost or bored. For 1:1 exchanges, even absolute beginners can start, since your partner will slow down and mix in English when needed, that's the whole point of the format.
How is the time split in the exchange (half English/half Italian)?
Thirty minutes in one language, then you switch and do thirty minutes in the other, usually with a clear break in between so it doesn't blur together. Most pairs agree on the split beforehand so nobody ends up talking mostly in their stronger language.
