Italian gives you a head start with the rolled r and with clear, pure vowels, but Russian throws in sounds Italian never asks for: the ы vowel (nothing like anything in Italian, sits between i and u), the х sound (a hard, throaty h that doesn't exist in Italian phonetics), and palatalized consonants like ть, дь, нь, which make words like учитель or день sound softer than any Italian consonant cluster. Add consonant pile-ups such as здравствуйте or взгляд and the first weeks are mostly about training your mouth, not your grammar.

Where Italian speakers get burned fast is false friends: фамилия looks like famiglia but means surname, магазин looks like magazzino but means shop, бисквит looks like biscotto but is a sponge cake, and сервиз looks like servizio but is a dinner set. On top of that, Italian speakers try to bolt articles onto Russian (there are none) or translate prepositional phrases word for word instead of using the case Russian actually wants — vado a casa di Maria becomes a genitive ending, not a preposition plus di.

What moves fast: Italian already drops subject pronouns because the verb ending tells you who's speaking, and Russian works the same way, so you skip the habit English speakers have to unlearn. Verb aspect (perfective vs imperfective) also has a rough parallel in the passato prossimo vs imperfetto split you already use in Italian, which gives you a mental hook instead of starting from zero. Cognates from theatre, music and science (театр, музыка, паспорт) read almost like Italian once you know the alphabet.

Words you will actually hear

Here Elsewhere What it means
фамилия famiglia False friend: фамилия means surname, not family. Family in Russian is семья.
магазин magazzino False friend: магазин is a shop or store, not a warehouse.
бисквит biscotto False friend: бисквит is sponge cake, not a cookie or biscuit.
сервиз servizio False friend: сервиз is a dinner set, not a service.
камера camera False friend: камера means cell or chamber, not room. Room is комната.
театр teatro True cognate: theatre, spelled and pronounced close enough to guess.
музыка musica True cognate: music, easy to recognize once you know Cyrillic.
банк banca True cognate: bank, same root, straightforward to learn.
артист artista Partial false friend: артист usually means performer or actor, wider than the Italian sense of artist.
паспорт passaporto True cognate: passport, nearly identical once you read the Cyrillic letters.

How it works here

  1. Sign up and say your level

Two minutes. If you do not know your level, we place you in the first class.

  2. Pick a class or an exchange

Classes are led by a native teacher. An exchange is with another member: half the time in their language, half in yours.

  3. Join by video, nothing to install

From your phone or your computer. If you cannot make it, cancel and get your place back.

Questions about this

How long before an Italian speaker can hold a real conversation in Russian?

The alphabet and basic case endings usually take the first few weeks of steady work. After that, progress depends on how much you actually talk, which is why the one-to-one exchanges matter more than textbook hours.

Is the Russian-Italian exchange really free?

Yes, the one-to-one exchanges are member-to-member: you trade time, not money, half an hour in Russian and half an hour in Italian. The small group classes with native teachers are a separate, paid part of PBC Languages.

What level of Russian do I need before joining an exchange?

Enough to introduce yourself and ask simple questions. Your partner is working on Italian and will slow down for you the same way you'll slow down for them.

How exactly is the half hour split during an exchange?

Thirty minutes in Russian, then thirty minutes in Italian, back to back with the same person. Keeping the split even is what makes the exchange fair for both sides.
