Learn Ukrainian from Brazilian Portuguese with PBC Languages

The vowel that trips up most Brazilian speakers is the Ukrainian и, a sound between i and e that doesn't exist in Portuguese — you'll hear it in 'ти' (you) or 'сир' (cheese) and your mouth will want to round it into a clear i. Word-initial consonant clusters are the other wall: 'хвилина' (minute) or 'вступ' (introduction) start with combinations Portuguese never allows, so the instinct is to sneak in an extra vowel. On the plus side, the tapped р is basically the r you already use in 'prato' or 'cara', so that one's free.

The traps that actually cost you conversations are the false friends. 'Фамілія' looks like família but means surname, not family (família in Ukrainian is сім'я). 'Трава' sounds like trava but means grass, not a lock or clamp. Grammatically, Ukrainian replaces most of your de/para/em prepositions with seven noun cases, so 'to my sister' isn't a preposition plus a word, it's a different ending on сестра. On top of that there's verb aspect (perfective vs imperfective), which Portuguese doesn't mark at all — you'll say 'написати' or 'писати' for what Portuguese covers with a single 'escrever'.

Where you move fast: Ukrainian drops the verb 'to be' in the present tense ('я студент', not 'я є студент'), so basic sentences come together earlier than you'd expect. Cyrillic is also far more phonetic than Portuguese spelling — no silent letters, no nasal tildes to guess at — so once you've got the alphabet down, reading matches sound reliably. And a chunk of vocabulary — проблема, театр, телефон, документ — comes from the same Greek/Latin stock as Portuguese, so it's recognizable on sight.
