Learn Ukrainian from Italian at PBC Languages

The Cyrillic alphabet is the first wall, but it's a short one: unlike English spelling, Ukrainian is almost fully phonetic, so once you know the 33 letters you can read almost anything out loud, even words you don't understand yet. The real trouble starts with sounds Italian doesn't have: the vowel и (something between Italian 'i' and 'e'), the letter г (a soft 'h', not a hard 'g' like in 'gatto'), and х (like the jota in Spanish, nothing close in Italian). Add mobile stress that jumps around depending on the grammatical form -- рука (hand) becomes руки (hands) with the stress shifting -- and you get words that sound unrecognizable in their plural or declined forms even after you've learned the singular.

Italian speakers also fall into false friends brought in through shared Latin or international vocabulary. магазин looks like 'magazzino' but means shop, not warehouse. батарея covers both battery and radiator, so a Ukrainian complaining about a cold батарея isn't talking about a dead phone. паста on its own usually means toothpaste; if you want the food, say макарони or паста з томатами to be safe. On the grammar side, Ukrainian has no articles at all (no lo, la, il, un) but compensates with seven noun cases that do the job Italian prepositions do -- so 'to Kyiv' isn't a preposition plus a fixed noun, the noun itself changes ending: до Києва.

Where things move fast: a chunk of everyday vocabulary is recognisable straight away because both languages absorbed the same international words -- театр, фабрика, кухня, клас, симпатичний, актуальний all mean roughly what they look like. Ukrainian also has three grammatical genders like Italian has two, so the concept of gendered nouns isn't new, only the extra neuter category is. And the consonant sounds you already use in Italian -- rolled r, clear p/b/t/d/m/n -- carry over directly, so pronunciation of consonants rarely needs correcting, it's the vowels and stress that need the real work.
